the slang "function" has 3 contexts in Brazil: the first and easiest to understand is that a "role" guy is a hoodlum, a hustler, an OG. the second (which is not mentioned in this song, but it is common to hear in other raps here) is "to do a function" which can be: dealing, stealing, doing something to earn money, that is, hustlin'. the third I can't explain very well, but apparently, in the late 70's until the mid 80's, there was a time that people in São Paulo called "function". "At the time of the Function", is mentioned by Mano Brown in other songs. I believe it was a generation of people who frequented the same place, probably this time is the beginning of hip hop in Brazil, because other rappers from other neighborhoods who probably didn't even know mano brown at that time also cite this term "function period "
"Root" on 1st verse is like a OG thing too. A old School Guy living the old ways like 80s n 90s. On second verse is a ancestor thing. is like..."Roots" by Alex Haley. Brazil have muslim comunitties but nothing like 5%. Maybe all muslims here are arabians. i read about the 5% some years ago. I see people like Rza, ODB, Rakim, Nas, Spike Lee using tshirts and collars with that logo and I was curious about it, I wanted to know what it was. I read and understood a little of what Clarence x13 wanted to show. but not. there's nothing like the 5% here

"Root" in this context means something along the likes of og, old school, like, respecting the vision of a better hood, better favela, not striving self-growth only. "Function" would be the work for this vision to happen, like spread the word that crime is not worth it and such, in a way that kids would believe it. I could be wrong tho

"Roots" means old school, commitment to information through culture. RAP as a social service. There's a very strong strand of that in the US too. I believe it has the same meaning.

Função (Function) is a slang in Brazil for a hustler, gangsta. Usually someone who's in the streets dealing drugs or robbing people.

Brown was talking about growing up hungry with nothing washing his own clothing with his hands ( no Landry machine ) having fucked up clothing dropping out school and growing up among monsters among crime but the funky black music saved him. He makes an analogy, like he received a call to the movement from listening to James Brown, about being proud of being black and represent the black power through hip hop and the funçao lifestyle. Through the call and the music he got everything that he has today but when he looks around on the real he still feels and still sees the black brothers with nothing and it’s a sad. ( the situation is still overall bad and the fight must go on implying that after all these time the overall situation is not good enough )
He mention that blacks even with nothing even during plantation and slavery had rhythm and found a way to dance in sync without messing up a step of the dance, (he praises that implying the infinity rhythm and strength) and again through that they found some happiness. He is praising the roots of blacks having rhythms and through its music finding a way to uplift themselves no matter the situation or hardship.
Brown is a poet !
