So, I guess the reason why the forest became forbidden (the true nature of the ghost story)... was due to the rules created by humans and hatred towards people.

It's been a while since we’ve seen a story with hidden meaning in the palace, but rather a ghost story with a mystery. But anyways, THE arc starts next episode… iykyk( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Weekly Maomao masterclass! This time in a very unlikely location, who would’ve thought what seemed like a girls sleepover would end up being an attempted murder.. good thing Maomao noticed the carbon monoxide poisoning before she passed the point of no return.

My hotel in Paris had a bad case of it back in 2017 and the hotel had to be evacuated/we went to hospital(never go to a Parisian hospital lol) I got nauseous and dizzy and it could’ve been fatal had the alarm not gone off. Definitely nothing to play with!

Whoever the lady that planned this is, she has a grudge against the former emperor and can you blame her? Basically forced to have a sex with a pedophile and carry his kid and then when he got tired of playing with her, he threw her to the side. Same thing he did with Jinshi’s mom. Him being autistic doesn’t change the trauma that had to have inflicted on the young girls involved! I’m wondering if she’s gonna end up being the person behind the abortion drugs in the palace.. would match up with her backstory quite well.

RIP to the lady who died from eating the poison mushrooms too. Too bad she didn’t get a chance to tell the villagers to go eat them as well, scumbags.

Now I want to go into a forest in the middle of the night to see those mushrooms. And hopefully don't die or be killed looking for it.

Shisui is nice, bring snacks and a good story.

Cut in the end just to remember that Jinshi is somewhere, and is part of the series.

A horror night with a twist.
Seems it was almost the end of all the girls at the horror night, luckily Maomao noticed it in time.
The ending also had a nice ring to it.

Shisui's tale was already captivating thanks to her surprising talent for storytelling but for all of it to culminate with insects was the cherry on top, especially considering it's her.

And given Yinghua's disposition to spooky stuff, I like to think her own story ended up being most family-friendly one lol

I'm glad we finally got back an episode where the fun and humor between Maomao and the people around her was shown.

Maomao who always couldn't resist Yinghua was the funniest, also Shisui needed more screen time, she still hasn't had much since the beginning.

Although there wasn't a particularly serious case this time, we did see the previous emperor being mentioned again. It would be sad if it was true that the woman in the house was one of the emperor's victims too. Well, this world is full of things that we might never understand.

Maomao had a very eventual day! Meeting some new coworkers and getting to hear some ghost stories. She's right that with Gyoukyou pregnancy progressing they need more help around the pavilion. It's smart to get them all from the same hometown, one familiar to the other trustful ladies in waiting. Maomao set herself up nicely in that storage shed, just sleeping there maybe isn't the best idea as Linghua was right it sends the wrong message. Which made the new ladies getting confused about Maomao being in the shed very funny.

Her and Linghua heading off to hear some ghastly ghost stories. Well not really since most of the stories are either tame or not even stories just weird rumors. It's a good thing that Maomao was dragged along here because the carbon monoxide would've killed all the girls in that room if she wasn't. The elder lady who organized the event definitely has a lot more going on we'll see later. This episode did a great job setting things up for later. I'm sure right now it seems like a one off inconsequential episode but this is one to remember for later. There's a lot of key moments that will help shed light on future events. Between the mysterious elder court lady and her story, Shisui looking familiar, and Jinshi thinking things over, there's a lot of setup for later going on and I'm excited to see the payoff. But before that we get some exciting events to end this first cour of the season!

A decent "filler" ghost-stories episode. But I felt weird about using such a disturbing past about the previous emperor as a spooky background mostly for fun...

Now who does Shisui "look like"..?

I am not fully convinced that this was a filler episode. Was new ghost host lady trying to gas, and kill, the girls? Mentioning the 13th ghost story a sadistic foreshadowing by her? Plot or accident? Hmm, silly question, there are no accidents in that palace complex. I wonder where this will tie in later.

So, Maomao has a aversion to groups of people, and 12 is pushing his limit.

That monk story was fucking scary, the monster legit looked like something from Dead by Daylight, also good that this thirteen's story didn't come to fruition but i feel bad for this supposed court lady that passed away for sure.

Ghost stories around a fire, got darker than we could have imagined...

This episode felt a bit like filler, with how it was just more of a one-off story about Maomao and Yinghua going to a ghost story gathering. This type of episode would have been perfect for Halloween, with the horror vibes. Shisui's ghost story was the scariest of them all, and one thing to take away from this episode was that Maomao thought she looked like someone familiar, and I wonder who that could be. Definitely not my favourite episode by any means but it was still enjoyable, and judging from the preview, it'll probably be something related to Jinshi. Any new information regarding him in the anime is always appreciated!

That was too damned close! They almost all ended up as one of the ghost stories! Still, I never considered CO poisoning, but yes obviously a risk in a closed room like that. I wonder why Maomao didn't realize it earlier when she started feeling woozy. So many people still die this way is what is REALLY scary.

caught the carbon monoxide poisoning very quickly as it killed a man i knew
as for the organizer as soon as she went into scene si tought she looked alot like suirei but comparing the 2 the mole doesnt match? could be makeup im not sure

but overall im a little disappointed, i wanted that juicy development and this felt like a filler.
im sure the attempted murder by the organizer and the adition of the 3 ladies will be important later tho. i jope so

Loved the episode, but all the stories within the 13 were boring except for Maomao's and the organizer's, especially how Maomao's story went from horror to gory, haha. Welp, i guess we ain't seeing the organizer for a while now, since luck just doesn't favor the bold. Especially with Miss. Einstein within the 12, organizer's plan got absolutely rekt, thanks to her.

Imagine if Yinghua was there by herself, oh boy, we would've gotten our first person in the Jade Pavillion to erase, but this ain't some supernatural kind of fiction, so i'm really excited as to what the "organizer" actually is, since i still can't picture her as a monster, even after her vanishing from Maomao's behind in an instant, so till i know her true form, imma stay tuned.

PS: FINALLY, AIN'T A LN READER, BUT I WAS STILL W8ING FOR THE FROG SCENE FROM S2'S DEBUT, AND THE NEXT-EPISODE PREVIEW FINALLY SHOWED IT, OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG.

considering the construction materials and ?era?, exterior wall windows, size of the room, age of the building, number of people in the room, candle flames, and amount of wood in the firepot when the episode FIRST started... CO poisoning was impossible. unless the room had ZERO ventilation (smoke hole in the ceiling), and somebody added more smoldering wood to the firepot 'off camera'.

frankly, i think this room would have been better designed by OLM/TOHO Animation Studio as an INTERIOR room with NO windows.

also, the smallest/most petite girls would have passed out first. lower body mass means less oxygenated blood inside the body. when the CO 'replaces' the O2 in the bloodstream through the lungs, it is almost at the same rate as absorption of O2 during molecular exchange while breathing. so Maomao, the lady in waiting, and Mao's bug loving friend wouldn't stay awake as long as they did. getting sleepy and passing out are NOT the first symptoms to appear: headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion all happen before you pass out... like the various ladies at the end of the episode. so Maomao would have realized it was CO poisoning BEFORE she was one of the first ladies to pass out. exactly the same math of molecular gas exchange when miners used to carry canaries and other small birds in cages down into the Earth. small body = faster effects than with humans if the birds breathed 'bad air'. plus tiny birds have a faster metabolism than humans.

Wait literally a ghost story this time? Or is this connected to some bigger plot too cause otherwise feels like one of those occasional random different short story that many animes put in at some point.

Yinghua's reactions were amusing but also cute. Her storytelling lol, found it cute. The three new lady in waiting sisters look like triplets. They seem like an interesting bunch. Great casting too, Satou Satomi specially. Kininarimasu.

Also funny how I started playing Silent Hill 2 remake tonight as I was craving for some horror thriller and then this episode dropped.

An entertaining episode telling spooky stories. Shisui had the creepiest story.... well, aside from the one about the older woman, which was actually real and related to that creepy former emperor, when a creepy story is completely real it's scarier. I'm not sure if the older woman was a ghost or not, but her clothes and appearance reminded me of the girl who faked her death last season. Poor Maomao had to put up with a terrified Yinghua.

This was the most time-wasting episode this anime season (I'm not counting Solo Leveling here) and that's surprising given that just last week, Akuyaku Reijo Tensei Ojisan had an episode so bad that I put it on as background noise halfway through instead of watching the screen, I did the same to this episode once they started the "horror stories".

I'm amazed that so many people consider this episode a filler or unimportant when it's clearly obvious that the reference to the former emperor's concubine wasn't mentioned unnecessarily.

But let the people cry, the elements will eventually come together and they will understand.

This episode makes me think that Maomao might have some experience in medicine and apothecary type of things. Maomao identifying that the mushroom was likely poisonous shows to me that maomao might be an apothecary or maybe even the apothecary mentioned in the title of the story, The Apothecary Diaries

Great kaidan episode. I just have two questions. Does the title now canonically have a paranormal element? And do the Chinese actually have a similar tradition of telling kaidan stories? Or is this just an easter egg by the author?

@MegamiRem Considering how much this episode brought Maomao and Yinghua together, albeit comedically, I wonder if the writer intended to ship them as a joke pairing? I mean, there were at least two "gay out of context" gags in this episode.

@senku_13 This episode references the Japanese tradition of telling scary stories, where people gather together with candles and extinguish them after telling individual scary stories. While this helps cool down during the summer (a time for scary stories and content in Japan), the whole experience is scary in itself. It is believed that when all the candles are extinguished and all the stories are told, the participants approach the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead. That's why at the end the lights go out and all the participants expect paranormal things. Of course, fictional depictions of this tradition often include an "it was all part of the story" ending, where the storytellers die or getting isekai-ed in ghost world.

Anyway, google Hyaku Monogatari. True, in the original there should be 100 candles, but where will you find so many people for scary stories these days?

@ropiel This is called the hyaku monogatari tradition, part of the larger kaidan culture. If you're interested, you can look it up online. There's even a standalone arthouse movie Kwaidan featuring a couple of these stories that looks pretty cool.

I found it quite predictable there would be a number of folks who would be complaining about this episode upon coming into the discussion thread topic, but all I can say is that I'm very pleased and satisfied with these episodes throughout the series of changes of pace and some relative downtime (while often still, as this one could be said to be, seeded with small interspersed bits of more worldbuilding clues/hints or longer-term plot relevant bits).

Last episode may have been my favorite of the series thus far (not just this season), but if every episode were like it, inducing stomach churning and taking my breath away, the whole show would rapidly become a nauseating affair to tune into on a regular basis.

Besides the welcome diversion, one thing that stood out to me about this episode is that it appears to be the first time in all 34 episodes of the series released up to now that some supernatural aspect without an opposing, alternative clear explanation strongly hinted at or later shown within the same episode is heavy implied to be real and exist. But generally if it took 34 episodes to appear and is still relatively small-scale as something like this then it could be said to be a very very low fantasy in that regard.

There have been series, including anime ones, I've seen like that, with almost no supernatural aspect to the world until one or more things of that nature later randomly appear. But sometimes it's so limited as to be a one-off contained to one episode.

The monsters in the short story of a monk would be bell crickets. It seems crickets eat one another. scary.... (There might be more implication in this episode for the later story, but I don't know since the manga got boring from the middle of the series and I just skimmed through it.)

Interesting story, and then there was the twist at the end. Who was that lady? A ghost?

As for the mushroom woman, if she did succed in telling the villagers about the mushrooms...they still would not have believed her though. Superstion ingrained dies hard.

It may seem like a boring episode, but I really like the way these kind of "characters telling a story" gives some hints/clues and maybe adds more mysteries into the plot, because its fun when it gets called back in the future episodes (as for this one, the old lady's story is similar to the one Anshi mentioned).
